Null edit after SDC edit

Thanks for adding SDC to your new uploads! Adding SDC like in this edit unfortunately doesn't trigger page invalidation (and update) so files will still be in tracker categories for SDC data missing. Bug somewhere in Phabricator. After adding SDC, can you do a null edit in your bot ("touch" the page) to trigger an update? Thank you, Multichill (talk) 13:47, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Editing structured data is not considered a normal edit when it comes to invalidation. Just edit the page text without changing it and that will trigger an update (just like you can do as a normal user). Multichill (talk) 15:35, 17 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi @Multichill the "null edit" I do with "action=edit&format=json&bot=true&title=File:xxx&appendtext=" sometimes blanks the page, for example here. Do you know how to avoid that? vip (talk) 11:15, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
Just do it like a normal user. Get the text and save it with the same text.

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

I see you have it listed at your user page. Did you ever consider uploading them? We have over 500.00 files, but https://www.dvidshub.net/search/beta returns nearly 5 million files. Multichill (talk) 15:28, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Hi! I already upload a lot of files from DVIDS (around 15k here) but as I review everything I upload, I don't plan to upload the entire database, at least not in short term. Right now I focus on space-related images (so mainly the Space Force, and a few pictures from Air Force), and also the DVIDS files taken in France. One problem with DVIDS is that in the 5 millions files, I find that many event-related files do not really belong to Commons scope as they feel more propaganda than informational pictures. Right now, to narrow the scope for Space Force, I maintain an ignore list of keywords that denote topics not space-related. If the community agrees that an entire upload of DVIDS makes sense for Commons, I could however technically do it (without reviewing the pictures however). vip (talk) 15:47, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

I guess it all boils down to signal to noise. We had similar discussions back in 2009 when I mass uploaded FEMA and US Navy photo's. In the end many more files were uploaded. Even with the propaganda I think it's still a good enough signal. Maybe just start small with pictures uploaded in the last month and see how that works out? Hello @Multichill! I have started to extend the scope of my DVIDS imports from "U.S. in France" to "U.S. in Europe", which adds a lot more pictures with the important presence of U.S. troops in Germany. It appears that bot mixes up files from dvidshub.net and sends files intended for Category:Milimedia files (review needed) to Category:Spacemedia files (review needed).
There're currently (about) 83 files in Spacemedia files (review needed) that are from dvidshub, but has nothing to do with Space Force, being instead from another parts of imperialist war machine US armed forces. See for example File:2nd Cavalry Regiment Quickstrike TOW Live Fire (8307646).jpg. Search filter isn't working, is it? Trasheater Midir (talk) 16:06, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
It is working. There a few false positives, but 83 files on about 10.000 is an acceptable ratio to me. The selection mechanism is pretty simple, based on the presence of a few keywords: "space", "rocket", "satellite", "launch", "nasa", "astronaut", "cosmonaut". vip (talk) 16:49, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
